Electronic and Ionic Transport at Nanoscale

    Abstract:

Novel and unique electronic and ionic transport phenomena often arise at nanoscale. Recently, we try to develop methods to integrate both transport behaviors into one nanodevice, which can be used for a lot of novel applications, especially single molecule DNA sequencing. In this talk, I will first present our research on the electronic transport through hydrogen bonded DNA nucleoside systems. The electronic signatures of all four DNA nucleosides in a tunneling junction can be clearly distinguished, which is realized through recognition tunneling techniques that we developed recently. In the second part of this talk, I will present our research on the carbon nanotube (CNT) based nanofluidics. CNT based nanofluidics have attracted enormous interests both in simulations and experiments in recent years because of the excellent geometry of CNT as a fluid conduit and the possible exciting applications such as biosensing, drug delivery and energy conversion and storage. However, the ionic transport mechanism through CNT is still not clear. We have developed reliable methods to systematically study the ionic transport through individual CNT. The excellent nanoscale electronic and ionic transport properties of CNT make it an ideal candidate for “electrofluidics” devices.  I will present our preliminary results in this direction.
